On National Medal of Honor Day, National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation Reflects on Service and Sacrifice

ARLINGTON, TX – On National Medal of Honor Day, observed every year on March 25 – the anniversary of the first awarding of the Medal by President Abraham Lincoln – the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation (NMOHMF) released the following statement from Cory Crowley, NMOHMF Executive Vice President

“In the 163 years since President Lincoln first awarded the Medal at the height of the Civil War, over 40 million Americans have served in uniform. Just 3,533 have received our nation’s highest award for valor in combat. Their stories have a home at the National Medal of Honor Museum. Their values belong to us all. Citizenship and patriotism, commitment and integrity, courage and sacrifice – the values represented by the Medal of Honor unite us a nation and inspire us with the very best of what it means to be an American.

“In recent weeks, the country has recognized new Medal of Honor recipients, both living and posthumous, including one who is 100 years old. It is a powerful reminder that many who wear the Medal are now in the twilight of their lives, and why it is so important that the Senate move forward to honor their legacy by passing bipartisan legislation to establish a National Medal of Honor Monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

“On this National Medal of Honor Day, we honor their service not only with remembrance but with resolve – so that as our nation celebrates 250 years and enters its next chapter, we do so guided by the same courage, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to serving others that define the Medal.”
