MEDAL OF HONOR CITATION

The President of the United States of America,

in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant James Samuel Hill, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 30 July 1864, while serving with Company C, 14th New York Heavy Artillery, in action at Petersburg, Virginia, for capture of flag, shooting a Confederate officer who was rallying his men with the colors in his hand.
