National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation Selects AECOM to Lead Site Selection Process for D.C. Monument

The National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation (NMHMF) today announced it has selected leading infrastructure consulting firm AECOM to spearhead the site selection process for a National Monument in Washington, D.C to commemorate the Medal of Honor and its recipients. The National Medal of Honor Monument Act, unanimously approved in both chamber of Congress and signed into law by President Biden last December, authorized the creation of a monument in our nation’s capital.

“We are thrilled to have AECOM as our trusted partner in developing this monument to America’s heroes,” said NMHMF President and CEO Chris Cassidy. “Washington, D.C. is home to many iconic sites, and – with AECOM’s support – I’m confident the National Medal of Honor Monument will soon join that list and serve as a place for all Americans to reflect on the values the Medal represents.”

“As a purpose-driven organization focused on social infrastructure, we are immensely proud to assist the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation in their mission of honoring Medal of Honor recipients,” said Alan Harwood, a vice president with AECOM. “We are excited to play a part in a project that will leave a legacy of bravery and service for generations of visitors to our nation’s capital.”

With expertise across a variety of fields, including project management, engineering, urban design and landscape architecture, AECOM has decades of experience overseeing projects that leave a positive impact on the community. AECOM jointly led the creation of the recently dedicated Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial in Washington, and contributed to the development of several other monuments and memorials around the world, including the National World War I Memorial, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the future site of the National Desert Storm and Desert Shield Memorial, among others along the National Mall in D.C.

AECOM’s hiring is an important milestone in Phase I of the multi-year monument project, which will conclude with the selection of a preferred site within the next 10-12 months. NMHMF staff have had extensive conversations with the National Park Service and have toured multiple locations on and around the National Mall. Along with the Monument, a National Medal of Honor Museum preserving and telling the stories of Medal of Honor recipients is slated to open in Arlington, Texas in 2024. Together, the Museum and Monument will inspire America by honoring the sacrifice, patriotism and courage of those who earned America’s highest award for valor in combat.
