National Medal of Honor Museum and DC Comics Partner to Produce Comic Book Based on the Real-Life Story of Medal of Honor Recipient Salvatore Giunta

“Medal of Honor,” written by Giunta and best-selling author Brad Meltzer, published in Our Fighting Forces Giant #1

ARLINGTON, TX – (April 22, 2020) –
The real-life heroics of Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Army Specialist Salvatore Giunta are the focus of a newly released comic book story produced in partnership by the National Medal of Honor Museum (NMOHM) and DC Comics. The story, published in the anthology comic book series Our Fighting Forces Giant #1, was co-authored by Giunta and New York Times best-selling author and NMOHM board member Brad Meltzer.

“Medal of Honor” is an eight-page comic story that begins, seemingly about Batman, but transitions to chronicle the heroic actions that earned Specialist Giunta the highest decoration available to members of the military. Jim Lee, DC Comic’s Publisher and Chief Creative Officer, created the art in the comic book.

Specialist Giunta was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Afghanistan and was the first living recipient for service in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was also the first living service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War. To read more about Specialist Giunta on NMOHM’s website, his profile may be found here.

“Partnering with DC Comics and co-authoring this story was an important opportunity to create a bridge between a fictional hero such as Batman and the real-life heroics of our nation’s most valiant – those who receive the Medal of Honor, America’s highest military award for valor in combat. This is also an amazing opportunity to reach new audiences with the true story of Specialist Giunta’s courage and patriotism while hopefully inspiring readers to learn more about the bravery of other Medal of Honor recipients as well. I want to especially thank Jim Lee and the DC Comics dream team who made this happen,” said Meltzer.

“Comic books are usually reserved for tales of supernatural heroes swooping in to save the day,” said Joe Daniels, NMOHM’s President and CEO. “This collaboration gives readers a glimpse of the true story of a real-life hero. The values that Specialist Giunta demonstrated on the battlefield—courage, sacrifice, integrity and commitment—are needed now in America more than ever. The National Medal of Honor Museum is honored to play a role in the publication of this comic. We’re thrilled for the opportunity to inspire America with these stories and Specialist Giunta’s incredible bravery is one of the most recent examples of the selfless sacrifice embodied in all Medal of Honor recipients.”

Our Fighting Forces Giant #1 is available for purchase at Walmart stores nationwide and is excitingly one of the first DC Comics available in digital form for purchase online.
